Wednesday was an exciting day. Rachel had the day off from class and another friend from home, Danielle, had come down to spend some time in Sydney with us. The agenda for the day was easy. Take the ferry to Manly and then walk from Manly to Spit. I assumed it would be an easy stroll. We left Surrey Hills with no water and no snacks, which led to me believe even more that was just a stroll along the coast. I was wrong. This was a legitimate hike of 10km. We walked through neighborhoods, along the beach, up stone staircases, and through bushes.

Always one to keep us on our toes, Rachel announces that she thinks we should take a break for some noshing soon. It was maybe a quarter of the way into the walk. There were no places to nosh along this trail. She then mentions that her blood sugar gets low sometimes and then I worry a little. She says she’s fine and we keep on moving. Sometime later she asks for some gum, which I luckily have. In my mind, I immediately think, “This is it. She is going to pass out from low blood sugar and Danielle and I will have to carry her out of here.” I, of course, make no mention of this to anyone for fear that just talking about that possibility will ensure she does pass out.
We continue walking, talk to some friends on the phone about where we think we are going to meet them along the trail, and continue hoping some type of food shack is around the corner. We are now coming towards the end of the trail and FINALLY find a place with food on Google Maps. The worry was over and the cheeseburgers with avocado were ordered after about 2+ hours of hiking.
I will admit the views along the trail made it easy to stop worrying about Rachel and her blood sugar from time to time. It was also fun taking the ferry to Manly and seeing the harbour from a different perspective. We were able to get a ride back home and we drove across Habour Bridge and through the city. I was excited to actually know where we were for a good portion of the drive.
After an exciting Wednesday, Thursday was much more low key. I spent the day wandering with Danielle, enjoying some craft beer and that night saw a live band at a bar followed by a meat pie with mushy peas on top. Now, we are getting ready to head out to Melbourne for the weekend. We plan on wandering more, and eating more.
